A Clinical Analysis of the Bacterial Infection in the Open Wound

Department of Orthopedic Surgery, College of Medicine, Chosun University Hospital, Kwang-ju, Korea.(Directed by Prof. Te Hyun Youn, M.D.) The author analysed 588 cases of the open wound treated at the Department of Orthopedic Surgery, Chosun University Hospital, from March 1974 to February 1979. The purpose of this study was to define the rate of infection and sensitivity test for the organisms after infectious changes of the wound. The results were obtained as follow : 1) The majority of these wounds were caused by traffic accidents (44%) and the next was industrial accident (19%). 2) Sex ratio between male and female was 4.4 : 1 and the incidence of peak age of the injury was 3rd decade (30. 6%). 3) Of 588 patients, 81 cases (13.7%) were infected and the main causative organisms were Staphylococcus aureus (40.7%). 4) Staphylococcus aureus was very sensitive to cephalospolin. 5) Pseduomonas and E. coli species were relatively sensitive to gentamicin, kanamycm and carbenicillin.
